a : food and drink regularly provided or consumed

b : habitual nourishment

c : the kind and amount of food prescribed for a person or animal for a special reason

d : a regimen of eating and drinking sparingly so as to reduce one’s weight (going on a diet)

Basically anything you ingest into your body, food and drinks are part of your diet.  Whether it is a salad, big mac, chicken, beer, milk soda, etc, all are part of your diet.  However, In the context of weight loss the term diet would cover all specific requirements in terms of what the food is made of, the amount food, and also how the food is prepared. Diets are not without problems especially when they’re bad.

A person can become addicted to a particular unhealthy diet that can result in diseases.  There is a saying that, you are what you eat.  This means that the foods you eat can predict what you will become in the future, or even yet what your health is now.  This takes into consideration that some diets renders longevity and some kill you fast.  Imagine a diet of beef, pork, processed cakes, ice cream, candy, vodka etc. That would really do a number on your body and longevity.

Healthy dieting is now a very popular subject across the world and more and more people are realizing the need to develop a well thought out diet that is fit for them.  High fat diet may cause coronary heart disease, stroke, hypertension, diabetes, obesity and low self esteem.  Low Protein diet results in malnutrition and depressed immune system, anemia (this is common in vegetarians), and in children kwashiorkor, a severe protein and vitamin deficiency characterized by retarded growth, anemia, changes in pigmentation and potbelly. It is getting harder to get all the nutrients needed from food alone.

It is common for people on a particular diet to eat less while supplementing with pills.  Some of the pills are suppose to induce anorexia, suppress your appetite, and limit the amount of food you eat.  A thorough research is necessary in selecting these supplements,  as they are too many dietary pills and fat binders out there that do not achieve what they promise.

Dieting is an important part of healthy living and everyone needs to be on one form of diet or another.  You may want to lose weight because   you are obese, not in the best shape, trying to maintain weight loss, or you do not want to grow fat.  Perhaps an illness prompted your weight loss journey.

Before starting a diet, it is best to get advice from your doctor. A doctor is in the position to appropriately advice you. Controlling what you eat is very important.  Diet is the biggest factor of whether or not we will have good health. It affects health more than anything else.  The best dieting results are achieved when we decide on it and stick to it.
